Work in progress at Kensville Golf Club. There’s no match to the square cobble when it comes to paving outdoors or landscaping. Actually cobble-like stones with smooth surfaces would make amazing indoor flooring too. But then, so many are fooled by the convenience of vitrified tiles.
Passing through the S.G. Highway before the Nirma Uni campus coming from the Thaltej side of Ahmedabad, you might chance upon this building. Natural multi-hued cobble-stone drive-way.
As you see above, we’ve placed different types of natural cobblestone in varying sizes here: granite, marble, sandstone, basalt. Not an exhaustive aggregation but gives you an idea.

All those work-in-progress pics posted earlier lead to this… Look beautiful. Adhunik Brown 75mm thick granite benches. That cavity serves as a planter. A few years hence, there’ll be trees, and lot of shade, god willing, and the promenade may just become a lovely place to hang out…

We are not ‘architects’. But since we supply material to building projects, it isn’t hard to keep wondering about the shapes these buildings take.
Of course, we don’t have a say in anything related to shapes whatsoever. We are mere suppliers of flooring material. At best, we may have a say in ‘quality’ of the flooring material we supply.
Why must a building always feel like a cuboid block? An efficiency-based answer is the best I can muster. That’s it. No more.
I would like buildings that are hill-shaped. We like hills, right? We love hills. If not hill-like they can at least turn out triangle-shaped if they have to be skyscrapers.
These guys in San Francisco named it Pyramid! Alright, let’s bear with it.
Is flooring a part of the furniture? If you say ‘obviously not’, what happens or changes if you treat it as part of furniture?
A glimpse of the under-contruction open-air theater at a reputed educational institute near Ahmedabad. We are supplying Cera Grey granite in flamed finish and Kota Stone.
Now that is machine-cut Black cobblestone for a bungalow project in Gandhinagar. Dimensions are 100mm x 100mm x 40mm. Exquisite laying. Small simple blocks of square. The grooving makes it groovy.

Preparing these 75mm thick granite slabs for granite benches. The benches will stand rock solid, of course, and may be for eternity. It’s tough handling such stone. Guys tough it out. Thankfully the weather has relented too in the last 2 days. Courtesy, the Vayu cyclone near the coast of Gujarat.
You may be pardoned to think of these as names of movies. In fact, Bollywood surely made a multi-starrer blockbuster Zalzala decades back. Crazy names for granite but I am sure you are gonna like what you see for Crazy Horse.

Ever compared a scratch on natural stone with a scratch on vitrified tile, timeline and space almost remaining the same?
Just because a vitrified tile is easy to lay doesn’t mean it is easy to enjoy. Oh the gloss, that’s so TV-like.
First they demand big big natural stone slabs, granite slabs, and then they demand ‘top’ quality, and then they funnily get down to bargaining for the lowest prices. Understandable since the quantities are often huge. But the thing is it is natural stone.

‘Big building business’ has an issue. They behave like government purchase departments. Lowest quote, highest quality. Now where have you found that? And they themselves often struggle to lay down the parameters or even develop the ‘eye’ to judge whether some piece of stone is great or not.
Taj Mahal doesn’t have the greatest quality of white stone. What it does have is the highest quality of craftsmanship.
When colors and repetition and irregularity intersect
And since I find irregular natural stone magical, I think this is a great idea. Have a block of irregular looking granite paving stones with different colors and then repeat that block over and over. Fair amount of intrigue and fair bit of ease in laying. Very very doable.

Of course, for a mighty majority it’s a mighty luxury to have such space in this part of the world. There’s no space means there’s no land means there’s no landscaping.
And yet there are the lucky ones who do have such a space. What do they do? They slab it. They slab it with rectangles. Nowadays, with huge rectangles. And somehow the machiners are improving their ability to slice the rocks into huge rectangles.
I haven’t had the chance to be in very many huge bungalows and huge spaces, but I’ve seen some. And the use of natural stone slabs is not one bit pleasing I must say.
In the above picture, interestingly, they are slabs but not rectangles. Endearing work! Would love to spend a lot of time doing nothing much on those two chairs. Find a wealthy uncle, a lucky cousin.

That’s Black Granite in irregular shapes
When choosing granite or other stone for flooring or paving, what really matters? It seems to me currently 2 major points play a role while making a choice:
Surprising when I pay just a little more attention.
Why isn’t ‘shape’ of tile or stone not considered at all! Typically it’s rectangle! Or sometimes, square. Why?
The variations of natural stone coupled with and cut in different shapes can produce a magic-like floor. No, I’m not talking about just outdoors or for landscaping. I’m talking about indoors too. Here, have a look at this indoor floor:

Over the years we’ve heard and bought these tiles on different occasions and often contrasted them with natural stone tiles. What’s the difference? Here’s a nice little write-up explaining what’s what. Am posting a screenshot below:
What’s the difference?
Nothing ages as beautifully as natural stone. Sure, natural stone takes a little while to lay. And patience is in very short supply!
“Why slab it when you can stile it!”
Increasingly now, and over a long time, I observe that natural stone tiling trumps natural stone slabbing.
Of course, it doesn’t mean that all floor needs to be tiled instead of slabbed. We find plenty of floors that are a combination of tiles and slabs and they look good.
But over last many years, so many folks have slabbed their floors edge to edge. As years pass by that doesn’t look as lovely, especially in smaller spaces, though always lovelier and more pleasing than the ‘vitrified’ tiles.
Multi-stone multi-color outdoor flooring. Would you ever get bored with this? This is for eternity. And it shall grow on the residents as it ages.

I love this arrangement. Aysmmetric and never boring! While typically such stone and pattern may be thought appropriate for outdoor laying, imagine such a pattern for indoor flooring. Endlessly interesting! Of course, for indoors, the type of stone and surface finish and method of laying may change.
Clicked when the work was in progress. Patterned using 2 colors of cobblestone.
This flooring was done way way back in 1996! 23 years! Imagine! It looks as good and as shining as it looked in the beginning.
Apart from the shine and sheen though, what’s amazing is that it looks more beautiful as it ages. Folks these days, builders and house owners alike, out of convenience so often lay vitrified tiles; yes, my office floor has vitrified tiles and it is no match to this granite floor.
Granite has natural and endlessly fascinating variations, whereas vitrified tiles are printed with the same print lifted normally copied and pasted from some piece of natural stone.
We did this landscaping job some time back. That’s multi-color Kota stone. Isn’t that gorgeous!
That’s a multi-colored marble floor done in a restaurant in Tel Aviv by the designer Meir Guri.
Looks wonderful, doesn’t it!? Haven’t seen anything like this in Ahmedabad or for that matter anywhere in India yet. In fact, this should look amazing in a mix of colors of India Granite too.
